Most trading mistakes are made in a hurry. The open is loud: spreads are wide, headlines are fresh and every chart looks like an opportunity. The traders who do best through it have usually done their thinking an hour earlier.

Use the quiet hour to write down three things: the levels you care about, the size you are willing to risk at each one, and the single condition that would make you stay out entirely. If it is not written down before the bell, treat it as a new idea and give it a smaller size.

Reading volume like a sentence

A breakout on thin volume is a rumour; the same breakout on two or three times the average volume is a statement. Reading the two together is the fastest way to tell conviction from noise.

Watch where volume shows up relative to the move. Heavy volume at the start of a trend and fading volume near its end is the classic shape of a move running out of buyers.

Velocity without whiplash: sizing positions in fast markets

Volatility changes how far a price can travel before you are proven wrong. Keeping the same share count when the average range doubles quietly doubles your risk.

A simple fix: size every position from the distance to your stop, not from a fixed amount. If the stop is twice as far away, the position is half the size and the money at risk stays the same.

Patience is a skill you can build into your setup: fewer watchlists, alerts instead of staring, and a written reason for every order.
